Today, people, welcome back to another episode of Steve's Small Engine Saloon. Right there, there's my website, SteveSmallEngineSaloon.com. Check it out when you get a chance. I have received enough questions and comments from emails or just comments on videos asking me this question, where it actually warrants a video. This is going to be a quick video on how to know how old your Briggs and Stratton engine is. People are curious, they just want to know. Super easy, on a Briggs & Stratton engine, you guys, there are three sets of numbers that are stamped on all Briggs & Stratton engines. They are usually stamped right into the metal on either your blower housing or on the top of the valve cover if you have an overhead valve engine. So, snoop around and see if you can find the numbers. You're going to have three sets of numbers: model, type, and code. If you can see those numbers but they're covered in paint or rust, the easy way to do this is to use a little piece of sandpaper or Emery cloth to sand it down. This will highlight the numbers and make them pop out. If it doesn't work, another tip is to use a black Sharpie permanent marker felt pen. Color the numbers in after sanding, and then rub it with your finger. This will help the numbers pop out. On this engine, you can see that the first six digits are the model number, the next four digits separated by a space are the type, and the last run of numbers is the code. Look at the first two digits of the code to determine the year of manufacture. In this case, it clearly says 76, meaning it was built in 1976.
