Color the numbers in after sanding, and then rub it with your finger. This will help the numbers pop out. On this engine, you can see that the first six digits are the model number, the next four digits separated by a space are the type, and the last run of numbers is the code. Look at the first two digits of the code to determine the year of manufacture. In this case, it clearly says 76, meaning it was built in 1976.
